Sleeping at Sixty

For those of us who have a long time partner, we know that their little nighttime snorts and grunts were sweet thirty odd years ago. The dog's snores are always sweet. They can do nothing wrong. They own the bedroom, the house, the fridge. This may not resonate with non dog owners. My advice; get a dog. You'll know what we are talking about!

Back to the partner, whose snores have now developed into thunderous, wall shaking, wrecking ball explosions. It will last for at least a half hour despite repeated punches to the arm, then things subside and you feel a wave of relief as the room grows peaceful once again. You drift closer to the sweet mists of semi consciousness, the duvet is warm, enveloping. Everything is well with the world.

Then the thoughts attack. The thoughts swarm like piranhas around a bloodied carp. They are relentless. No sleep possible with a million solutions, fissures, relatives, friends, deadlines, finances, meal plans, office shenanigans, Aunty Cathy!

Storied advice: focus on your breathing. In for four, out for four, in for four, out for four. In for four, need to practice my serve. Out for four, the kids will never be on their own. In for four, I need to earn money. Out for four, I'm old and outdated. In for four, I could start a blog. Out for four, snore at your own risk buddy!!

There's a nice swath of time where dreaming has taken place. It wasn't long but I appreciate it. I feel somewhat refreshed. It's probably in the 3' 0 clock period when I am again awake. Now I am somewhat reassured. I only have 3 hours to go when I can respectably get up.

I could go over the inadequacies of life, or I could go full bore on what might be! First off, my serve becomes Sabalenkaesque! Ok, my whole game is up there. I'm winning matches, I can't be beaten, my friends are in awe. You are delusional, you are too old and you should go to sleep!

Brain exhausted, I sleep. 6am: up, and accept that I no longer sleep like a child, lovely as that might be!!

Wishing you all your best snore free sleep xxxx

Of course these are designed to be hacked through with a machete. Except at 60 you are starting to get a little resistant. I get up at 6.30, let the dogs out, make the coffee which has to be made in a
